Matsuda Mio (Japan)

Whiteboard Journal

Composition-wise, Matsuda Mio's Automatic Play Machine 2 shows a good understanding of space, using depth and placement to guide viewers through the image. As for the subject, one cannot be quite sure of what those creatures are (the dolls, illustrations on walls, etc), but having their limbs locked by metal hooks is quite unsettling, making one wonder what is going on in what apparently is a bedroom. The strokes on the pillow-dolls are also attractive, defining shape and details using 2-dimensional on a 3-dimensional object. This image is the favorite from her Automatic Play Machine series.
